Common Gaps Medigap Helps Cover
Part A hospital costs
Help with the Part A deductible and inpatient coinsurance for longer stays.
Part B coinsurance
Original Medicare covers 80 percent of outpatient services. Medigap addresses much of the remaining 20 percent.
Foreign travel emergency
Some plans reimburse emergency care abroad up to plan limits. Frequent travelers may also want to review travel insurance options.
Answers to Frequent Medigap Questions
What is the difference between Plan G and Plan N?
Plan G generally covers everything that Original Medicare doesn’t, except the Part B annual deductible. It also covers Part B excess charges. Plan N usually has lower premiums but adds small copays (up to about $20 for many office visits and up to about $50 for ER visits if not admitted) and does not cover Part B excess charges; you’d pay those if a provider bills above Medicare’s approved amount.
Can I get a Medigap plan if I’m under 65 and disabled (North Carolina)?
Yes—North Carolina guarantees access during your Medigap open-enrollment window if you’re under 65 and on Medicare due to disability, but the choices are limited to Plans A, D, or G. Insurers may charge higher premiums than for age-65 enrollees, and they can apply up to a six-month pre-existing condition waiting period.
Will my Medigap premium increase as I get older?
Often, yes. Many policies are “attained-age” rated, which means your premium can rise as you age. Others are “issue-age” (priced based on the age you were when you bought the policy) or “community-rated” (same price for everyone in an area), though all types can still see increases due to factors like medical inflation or claims experience. Check how a policy is rated before enrolling.
